Mid-century modern decor is back, but this time it’s infused with minimalist Scandinavian style, subtle patterns, and a color palette that is cooler than ever. Actress Jennifer Aniston’s living room is a prime example of this ‘contemporary’ version of mid-century modern style.
Designed by Stephen Shadley, with whom she had collaborated on her previous L.A. home, the living room is awash with tactile, organic furnishings, sharp lines, and eclectic design. It feels like a tranquil sanctuary amid the verdant foothills of the Santa Monica mountains, albeit a very cool, modern one.
The final result is a masterclass in biomorphic forms, mixed materials, and nuanced color choices.
When it comes to interior design trends, there is a modernist vibe in the air for 2024 and beyond. With their classic looks and pared-back style, mid-century living room ideas are enduringly popular and show no signs of abating.
Spanning the decade between the Thirties and the Seventies, the simple shapes so common in this era were inspired by earlier design movements, including the Bauhaus school in Germany. Materials such as molded plastics allowed the world’s best interior designers to explore new textures, easy-to-live-with colors, and angular forms.
Aniston’s living room is what I would call a hybrid between mid-century and warm minimalism. A trend that embraces warm neutrals and cylindrical forms. The space is neither stark nor cold, but soft and comforting.
Getting this distinction right, as Shadley has done, is tricky but not impossible. Mixing furniture trends and styles – sharp lines with curves – is the best place to start. Stick to raw and natural materials where possible and throw in the odd metallic accent, textural soft furnishing, and stone accessory for good measure. Just be sure to decorate with only neutrals. Black, dark brown, gray and cream are the best options.
Shop the mid-century modern look
Mid-20th century influences abound – bold color, raw wood, and bronze details – and black notes are key. Here are my favorite ways to replicated the look.
O’Bright Portable LED Table Lamp with Touch Sensor
I couldn’t be without my portable lamp. I no longer have to worry if my side table is close to a power outlet and I can carry this lamp from room to room. Plus, the gorgeous gold color is the perfect splash of color.
Huybert Solid Wood Frame Upholstered Mid Century Modern Armchair
This gorgeous mid-century modern style chair is over 40% off as part of Wayfair’s early Black Friday sale. It is a statement way to capture this trend, and this armchair is a design classic that will endure.
Bloomingville Decorative Hand-Carved Paulownia Wood Bowl
This decorative bowl looks like stone but is actually hard-carved wood – making it ideal and lightweight for homes with younger children. This neutral color scheme will fit in with just about any interior style or color scheme too.
Plush pillows were a staple in the ’60s – and they are back and better than ever. Using texture in interior design is the easiest and more effective way to reinvigorate a tired living room and couch.
Sullivan Reclaimed Wood Coffee Table
A solid elm wood coffee table will endure beyond any trend or decorating style. This design is unique – no two pieces are the same – so you can be certain you are getting a one-of-a-kind table for a main street price.
Haddie Mid Century Modern Microfiber Club Chair Brown
This gorgeous – and affordable – mid-century modern style chair is a must have if you want to replicate this trend on a budget. I’ve added two to my shopping cart while it is currently on sale with 30 percent off.
For more ideas, look to design icons like Florence Knoll and Arne Jacobson for inspiration – both of whom were prominent designers during the mid-century modern period. Their work still influences the world’s top creatives, even now.
