How to Style a Two-Toned Sofa to Elevate Your Living Room

If you’re looking for a unique, sustainable, and stylish way to upgrade your living room, look to your sofa. Probably the most lived-in and beloved part of your space, sofas can transform a room, but they can also be quite an investment. However, by introducing a two-toned sofa—mixing and matching the furniture’s cushions with its arms and back—you can make cost-effective upgrades that are perfect for an open-concept space.

Why Two-Toned Sofas Work

Stefania Skrabak, principal designer of New York-based AHG Interiors, says that although clients never request two-toned sofas specifically, she loves including them in her living room designs. According to the designer, they break up room layouts in refreshing ways, allowing you to see a space from different angles and perspectives.

“When we look at large furniture—usually sofas and beds—from a design perspective, they are essentially blocks of color that just take up space,” says Skrabak. “When we are trying to design, we always want a movement of color and space, and the best attribute of a two-toned sofa is that it allows us to do that.”

Two-toned sofas work particularly well in open-concept spaces because of their versatility, according to Skrabak. Instead of defaulting to pushing the back of a sofa against a wall, she says that two-toned sofas can be featured as stand-alone pieces, interesting to view from anywhere. Plus, they can be upgraded easily (and on a budget) for homeowners who like to follow the trends or switch up their decor from time to time.

“They give a lot of design interest, but also practicality, to a piece of furniture because if you need to change it out later on, it gives you options,” says Skrabak.

Adding a Two-Toned Sofa

If your sofa has already endured a fair bit of wear and tear or you want to add a vintage furniture set to your living space, a two-toned sofa could be the perfect fit. You’ll be upgrading your space and reducing waste, all at the same time.

“Usually what ends up happening when you buy a vintage sofa is that the cushions or the arms are destroyed,” says Skrabak. “It’s a great way of salvaging a piece of furniture by making it two-toned and intentional and being able to keep what’s usable.”

Because they’re a bit untraditional, it can feel intimidating to style a two-toned sofa. However, the great news about these two-for-one couches is that the color scheme is entirely up to you. Whether you’re looking to go all-out and play off of accent colors already featured in your living room or you’re looking to invest in something a little more timeless, a two-toned sofa is sure to fit the bill.

“You get a lot more longevity from playing it safe, and by doing neutral on neutral, but then you also gain a lot of interest from really pushing the design and mixing in different colors,” Skrabak says. “Either have fun with it or…do the neutrals.”

Skrabak says that her go-to color palette for two-toned sofas is a mix of browns and beiges, a combination she says is liveable (masking stains and wear) and a refreshing turn away from a recent period in interior design that spotlit all things gray. Plus, brown and beige tones deliver “a sense of warmth and coziness” that’s perfect for a family living space, she adds.

Combine Vintage and DIY

If you’re on the hunt for a two-toned sofa and have size or color preferences in mind, you may struggle to find the perfect fit—they’re not made as often as the single-toned standard. Skrabak says when she’s incorporating them into her work for AHG Interiors, her team often salvages vintage furniture or custom builds a piece for the client’s home because of this scarcity.

Fortunately, it’s not too difficult to create a two-toned sofa of your own without spending the time and money it takes to have something built that’s unique to your home.

“DIY is a wonderful option,” says Skrabak. “You can go to your local seamstress at a dry cleaning place and have the cushions made, which is really cool and very easy. Then you can get a lot of bang for your buck.”
