Inside The Newly Restored Eames House In L.A.

Situated on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and nestled among nature, the Charles and Ray Eames House has reopened to visitors after sustaining considerable smoke damage due to the Palisades wildfires earlier this year. Over the past five months, the house has undergone a meticulous restoration process, which includes the debut of the Eames Studio, a space that will be open to the public for the first time ever.

The studio, where visitors will begin their journey at the Eames house, serves as an introduction to Charles and Ray’s design legacy and spotlights the brilliance behind the creative duo. The space will showcase exhibitions, as well as provide education and public engagement.

“Being able to connect the dots and provide this incredibly deep and multi-layered understanding of their work and creative partnership will be really meaningful,” Adrienne Luce, executive director of the Eames Foundation, shares. “We have grand aspirations, but we really want it to be a space for engagement, hands-on learning, and [inspiration for] our visitors.”

Alongside the opening of the studio is the establishment of the Charles and Ray Eames Foundation, which is dedicated to preserving and expanding the legacy of the international, creative visionaries. A vital contributor and safe space for the Los Angeles community, the Foundation has already hosted two gatherings in the Eames studio to continue its initiative in supporting greater wildfire recovery efforts.

As the studio begins a new chapter as a center focused on public engagement, Luce shares what’s she learned from restoring the Eames House and establishing the Foundation: “It reminds me that this true security doesn’t come from resisting change. It comes from embracing it with curiosity, with creativity, and resilience. I think those ideas are really at the heart of our work.”
