Before selecting your desk, consider the space where it will be in your home. Courtnay Tartt Elias of Creative Tonic Design says it’s about the right balance of form and function.

“Think about where the desk will live, hugging a wall or floating in the middle of the room,” she says. Options like the Teraves L-shaped desk will require a certain amount of space to avoid overwhelming the area, while the Toulouse secretary desk is ideal for home offices that lack ample room.

Keep in mind that your desk doesn’t have to be massive to be mighty, Elias says. But if you want it to be the main feature of the room, she recommends you go big and heavy in terms of size.

Material

There are a range of materials to consider, such as engineered wood, real wood, steel, and more.

You’ll want to consider your room’s overall style when making your selection. “If you’re looking to lighten up a room full of dark wood, try something in glass, acrylic, or a painted finish,” Elias says. 

Kathryn Dunagan, vice president of Marc-Michaels Interior Design, also offers advice when considering materials. “[Choose] a material that speaks not just to how you work, but how you want to feel while working,” she says.

Wood material can give you a sense of warmth and permanence while glass is perfect for smaller rooms or lovers of modernism. Keeping that in mind can help you make the ideal choice for your needs.
