Love Colorful Interior Design? Check Out This Dallas Home!
Roz Murphy may be known for her sophisticated designs, but it’s her personal home that has us utterly captivated. The Dallas interior designer outdid herself with this project, and she’s invited us in for a look around. From bold patterns and vibrant florals to luxe layered fabrics, prepare for some serious eye candy!
Located in the desirable University Park neighborhood of Dallas, TX, Roz’s 3,500-square-foot home includes three bedrooms and three bathrooms. “The original ranch-style home was built in the 1950s, and a second floor was added in the 1980s,” Roz tells us. “We purchased the house in 2010 and have been making updates to reflect our family and personal style ever since.”
Roz finally completed the project in 2023 — A whopping 13 years after they started the renovations and design process! But it was well worth it. “We worked slowly, going room by room, ensuring no small detail was overlooked,” she says. “Twelve years later, we decided to take on the big renovations.” The project’s scope included updating the kitchen, bathrooms, and patio of her original 1950s ranch-style home.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Roz’s family home was inspired by bright colors, memorable collectibles, and antiques — all of the elements Roz is known for in her successful interior design career. “We wanted to create a warm and cozy place to raise our family, and these items help create a personal and eclectic feel,” she says. “I am inspired by color and pattern. Since the home looks like a cottage on the exterior, people are quite surprised when stepping into the interior due to all the whimsical elements. What can I say? I love the unexpected!”
Speaking of the unexpected, the home’s cushy sitting room boasts upscale Miami-throwback vibes, with an Art Deco-leaning pink-and-green combination that could rival the Palm Beach-inspired hotels of the ’20s.
With plenty of room for relaxing, reading, and reclining, this home is made for gathering family and friends. “Our home doesn’t have a formal entry, so guests enter the living room upon opening the door. The downstairs has a formal dining room, study, sun room, family room, and kitchen, and the upstairs houses the primary suite and additional bedrooms,” Roz tells us. “We also love our covered patio, which we consider a living area due to how often we spend time there.”
In fact, having ample space for family life is what drew Roz and her crew to the property in the first place. “With two daughters, we found ourselves wanting more space,” she admits. “We found this home on a wonderful block and the perfect lot that we knew could be a forever home. Although it was a dream location, there were significant changes and updates I wanted to make upon purchase.”
“The family room has a base layer of light neutrals, but I added the bright chevron drapery pattern in light blue,” Roz explains of the earth-toned living room that boasts pops of rich color. “We love the chinoiserie dragon fabric on the swivel chairs and the cantaloupe accents on the ottoman and game chairs to add a sense of warmth.”
While many of the rooms possess standout elements, it’s the dining room Roz loves most. “My favorite space is our dining room. The tropical wallpaper and my well-loved collectibles bring me immense joy … I wanted to dial up the drama with the dining room, so I selected a tropical bird mural with a silk background and bright pops of chartreuse,” she explains. “From there, I layered with an Oushak rug and lavender silk draperies. I custom-designed the buffet, which reflects my love for Neoclassical style, and the finishing touch is the champagne metallic wallpaper on the ceilings for an added glam factor.”
As with any project, Roz tells us there were challenges during the renovation process — namely, that she had to make a concerted effort not to overload the rooms with too much furniture or collectibles. “For this home, scale was difficult, as the ceilings are low,” she says. “We didn’t want the rooms to look or feel overcrowded.”
The home’s interior is striking, to say the least, but its exterior is equally dazzling. It’s no wonder Roz and her family spend so much time on the covered patio! From an outdoor dining table and in-ground pool to a lounge area with a fireplace, the backyard beckons.
